BPW International

The International Federation of Business and Professional Women (IFBPW) was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, on August 26, 1930, on the initiative of Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips. As President of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs of the United States of America, she organized several "Goodwill Tours" to Europe in 1928 and 1929. Hundreds of American women participated in these tours with the purpose of meeting business and professional women in Europe and promoting affiliation with them. The founding member countries of the international federation were Austria, Canada, France, Great Britain, Italy and the United States of America. Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips was elected as the first IFBPW President and served until 1947.

The International Federation of Business and Professional Women is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that has had Consultative Status with the United Nations through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 1947. At present there are a total of twenty-one members serving as representatives of IFBPW at the United Nations and its subsidiary organs, specialized agencies and related organizations.

Today the International Federation of Business and Professional Women is also called BPW International.
BPW International (BPWI) has a category 1 consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), also with the International Labour Office, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), UNIDO, UNICEF, UNCTAD, UNIFEM, FAO and IFAD.
BPWI has permanent representatives at the United Nations and it's agencies in New York, Geneva, Paris and Vienna. These representatives keep all BPWI affiliates informed of UN activities and represent their views during meetings, particularly on issues relating to women's status. Read more

BPW- Nigeria is the Federation of Business and Professional Women - Nigeria. An affiliate of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International).
BPW - Nigeria was founded in 1961 by Lady Obafunmilayo Manuwa and a few like-minded Nigerian women in Lagos. Lady Manuwa first heard of BPW in Addis Ababa where she attended a seminar. In 1962, the Lagos Club became an associate club of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women followed by the Ibadan and Enugu Clubs in 1964 and in 1965, all these clubs became known as The Nigerian Federation of Business and Professional Women, which is now known as Business and Professional Women - Nigeria.
BPW-Nigeria is an affiliate of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (IFBPW) formed in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1930, on the initiative of Dr. Lena Madesin Philips of U.S.A.
BPW is a pressure group, and opinion-making group, non-partisan, not for profit and non-sectarian. It is one of the world's largest organised networks of business and professional women in the world. It actively promotes women into decision-making positions.
